EP 622: Gloria Horsley & Frank Powers – The Secrets of Senior Dating

Tell us about your backstory and how you met.

Gloria: After a 60 year marriage, my husband died. I met someone golfing and we were in a relationship for seven months. He couldn’t deal with my large family and he ghosted me. After being a therapist for 40 years, I learned a lot in this relationship. Had I met Frank before that, we would have both said it wasn’t the right time. I was in Hawaii on a family vacation and wrote a book for widows based on my experience. I then decided to go online and went on Silver Singles and met Frank when I got back to the mainland.

Frank: I had been divorced a few years before and was ready to end my career and go to a senior community. But then I decided to try Silver Singles one more time and I met Gloria. We had an instant connection because our background was so similar.

Why did you decide to write this book together?

Gloria: I wanted to help people learn how to find love as seniors, but I didn’t have the male perspective.

Frank: I had been married to a therapist for 17 years, and we tried to write together, and it was a dismal failure. With Gloria, it was so easy. We wanted people to know where to meet, how to see if someone’s compatible, and to help with the fears people have when it comes to dating.

What’s the number one tip for seniors who want to jump into the dating world?

Get yourself a dating buddy who will help you with your profile. Find someone who’s similar to you. We call it being in a parallel partnership, doing things side by side. We also feel it’s helpful to make a list. On one side, all the qualities that work. On the other side, write the qualities that don’t work. Apply that to your search. We are living much longer now, and they’re healthier. After a relationship ends, you’re alone again. Do you want to find someone? Get out there and search and be proactive. Stay away from Debbie Downers.

What do you think is the biggest misstep in dating and how do you turn that around in the right direction?

Don’t present your idealized self. Be honest and present your true self. Know how to handle it when others don’t represent themselves honestly. Meet the person as soon as possible. Don’t fall in love through texting and calls.

What are your final words of advice for anyone who wants to go on their last first date?

Consider online dating, because that’s where the action is. Do it now. Don’t waste time or let the fears get in your way. You’ll have pleasant and unpleasant experiences. Just get out there. And get yourself a dating buddy who will be there for you for the good and bad experiences.
